On Tuesday, November 15th, at 1:30 pm, the Board of Directors of the Del Mar Fairgrounds will discuss the question of ending gun shows at the Fairgrounds. This will be our best opportunity in several years to achieve this long-sought objective. Recent new appointments to the Board, along with a growing public concern over gun violence in America, have raised hopes it can be accomplished this year. We need your support to help make this happen!

A few years ago, more than 900 signatures were gathered in support of ending gun shows at the Fairgrounds. Now, every candidate running for the Del Mar City Council agrees it’s time to stop gun shows in our community. Increasing gun violence has brought greater public awareness of the problem. A CBS News poll last June revealed that only 36% percent of American households now own guns – the lowest level in more than 40 years. A later survey by the Guardian reveals that just three percent of gun owners own 50 percent of all the guns!

We believe gun shows are an inappropriate use of the State-owned Fairgrounds, whose primary mission is to promote wholesome family-oriented programs promoting agriculture, entertainment and recreation activities. Urge the Fair Board to replace the gun shows with other activities, such as agricultural programs on the benefits and methods of growing farm-to-table food, or consumer electronics exhibits, for example, which would reach a broader community and be more wholesome. Please show your support by writing to the Fair Board, and attending the meeting on November 15th.
