Our Community Builder Campaign

Earlier this year, the Del Mar Foundation officially launched its Community Builder Campaign, the goal of which is to raise $500,000 over the next five years, and bring our endowment to $2 million. If that sounds like a lot of money, it is, but it’s also for a great cause.

The impact of the Foundation on our community is obvious during the summer, as we join together at twilight concerts, 4th of July parades, and movie nights at Shores Park. Our events continue throughout the year, however, featuring our DMF Talks, First Thursdays and Blue Grass and Beyond concerts, meet and greets, Parents’ Nights Out, pet-centered events, and a variety of entertainment catering to our younger families. We also will be hosting our inaugural “Picnic at Powerhouse Park” on Sunday, October 9, from 12 to 4, where we hope everyone will share some good food and beer, participate in old-fashioned games, and even get an opportunity to meet the city council candidates.

While these events require financial support, they do not adequately explain the need for a $2 million endowment. That’s where perhaps the Foundation’s most important purpose comes into play – awarding grants to various worthwhile causes within Del Mar. Our endowment currently provides the means to direct $40,000 per year to local organizations such as Community Connections, San Dieguito River Conservancy, CERT, Del Mar Lifeguards, Del Mar TV, and Free Flight. We have also provided crucial funding for the restoration of the Library Mosaic Wall, the purchase (along with Friends of the Powerhouse) of a new rescue boat, and the acquisition of beach wheelchairs in association with the Wounded Warrior Project. A $2 million endowment should allow us to increase our grants from their current level to $80,000 to $100,000 per year, allowing us to meet even more pressing needs.

Thanks to the community’s extraordinary response, we are already more than halfway to our fundraising goal. As Chair of the Foundation’s Development Committee, I would love to take the credit but, in reality, this campaign sells itself. Our donors love Del Mar, and their generosity demonstrates their appreciation for the positive impact of all of our not-for-profits.
