The KAABOO music festival will make its way back to Del Mar on the weekend of September 16-18th. This time it will feature more musicians and comedians that even Del Mar’s demographic will recognize, like Jimmy Buffett, Aerosmith, Dana Carvey, Cheech and Chong, and Darrell Hammond – along with a boatload of celebrated chefs. Residents, except for Parrotheads, hope the sound engineers have a better grip this year.
Keeping the Peace
City staff is working on process recommendations for how the Council and the community can approach consideration of alternative models for achieving better service for the $ 2 million plus we spend on our Sheriff contract. Members of the Finance Committee who initiated the law enforcement assessment are meeting with various community leaders and Council candidates to bring them up to date on the work they have done and the recommendations contained in the consultant studies.
Watermark Planners Reassess
Based on the feedback from the Design Review Board, neighbors and the general public the Watermark planners have completely reassessed their Specific Plan proposal. They are making significant changes including reduction in the number of units, greater setbacks from neighbors and the street, height reductions, additional parking spaces, and more open space. In September the draft EIR will be made public and the revised proposal will be made available to the public. The final EIR will be completed in a few months and the formal review by the DRB, Planning Commission, and the City Council can begin early next year. Meanwhile the initiative to force a vote will be on the ballot as Measure R. (see an analysis of Measure R defects here.

Finance Excellence
For the 20th year in a row our Finance Department has received an “Excellence in Financial Reporting” award.

Civic Progress
Bids for construction of our new civic center are being reviewed and a final contract issuance is expected this month.
