I recently graduated from ESP...yes, after all of these years I thought I would give myself a magical extra-sensory gift. But don’t be fooled for long! This special ESP gift is there for all of us...right in our own backyard. The “Experiencing Your Sense of Place” (ESP) program, given by the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy is one of a kind. Combined with monthly hikes through many of the 55 miles of River Valley trails, local experts give classes on a variety of topics pertinent to this area which include: the Native Americans who lived here long ago; easy to understand explanations of our unique ecosystem; the characteristic geology of our area, including how watersheds are formed; and help identifying animal tracks, local birds, flowers, chaparral and trees which are all native to our region. On these hikes, all of one’s senses are working overtime! I can say now that I finally understand the history of our own Lagoon, it’s important ecological impact on local marine and bird life, and how starting 30 years ago several Del Mar residents, led by Nancy Weare (founding president of the Del Mar Lagoon Committee, 1974, and of the San Dieguito River Valley Land Conservancy, 1986) and Alice Goodkind (founding president of the Friends of the San Dieguito River Valley, 1986)persistently led our City and the region to preserve and protect this special natural asset for all future generations.

We are so lucky to have this valuable resource within walking distance of our homes!
