Open space deeded to the City of San Diego in 1976 to mitigate for the loss of open space in the San Dieguito River Valley is at risk of being used by the 22nd Agricultural District for excess parking during the Fair and Racing seasons. Use of the property as a parking lot would involve a change in zoning regulations and put the City’s mitigation promises everywhere at risk

The City issued a Request For Proposals (RFP) after the existing lease with the Rancho Santa Fe Polo Club had expired, and Surf Cup Sports reportedly has just been selected the finalist pending Development Services review. An article in the Rancho Santa Fe News reported that a contingent contract with the 22nd District Agricultural Association (included in their agenda of Nov. 15, 2015) states that if the Surf Cup obtained the lease of the Polo Fields, it would allow the 22nd DAA to use part of the site for parking and storage during the County Fair and perhaps other events for $75,000 per year.

This agreement would be contingent on the City approving the use of parking on property where parking is now prohibited as a primary use. Del Mar based Friends of the San Dieguito River Valley has been communicating with the City regarding excessive use of the property since 2003 and is expected to oppose further intensification. Stay tuned.
