The 22nd District Agricultural Association (DAA) Board has approved the exploration of alternative governance models for fair operations that would include representation for Del Mar and Solana Beach. The models under consideration would not replace the current Board appointed by the governor, but would add another entity that would be under contract to operate the San Diego County Fair and other special events. The process is in the early stages of review by the Attorney General’s office, and it is anticipated that more details will be available in the next few months.
Mayor Lee Haydu and councilmember Don Mosier are Del Mar’s representatives to the 22nd DAA Community Relations Committee, and have worked with Fair Board members David Watson and Lisa Barkett as well as Solana Beach representatives to advance a model that will give local cities more input into 22nd DAA operations. This is the first step in a process that will require approval by the state and possibly legislative action, but it is an important starting point that reflects the spirit of cooperation between the 22nd DAA Board and Del Mar and Solana Beach.
