Del Mar Community Connections (DMCC) was incorporated fifteen years ago with the goal of providing services that would help seniors in Del Mar maintain healthy, safe, and dignified living in their own homes. Providing transportation and socialization were two critical ways to achieve this goal, and DMCC has stayed the course.

The first goal, transportation, continues to be achieved by individual volunteers and DMCC staff dedicated to helping residents age in place, who drive seniors to their doctors, hairdressers and yoga classes, and by regular DMCC bus excursions that make grocery and other shopping a safe and enjoyable experience.

The second goal, socialization, has largely been realized through the efforts of Mary Ann Emerson, a DMCC Board Member and one of the original founders of the non-profit organization. “After being there from the start,” says DMCC Founder Nancy Weare, “Mary Ann is still the dedicated and energetic leader of the DMCC Social Services and Good Times Committee, providing along with members of her committee, a variety of social events for Del Mar seniors. These range from fun get-togethers, such as the Spring and Holiday Teas and the monthly luncheons, to serious discussions of elder financial abuse and health issues – and she also organizes the popular annual flu immunizations.”

In addition, the Social Services Committee has presented the work of Del Mar artists, autobiographical writing classes, de-cluttering seminars, feng shui tips, and jewelry/antique appraisal talks. “Mary Ann never runs out of ideas, and her enthusiasm,” says Nancy, “makes participating on the committee a rewarding and enjoyable experience!”
