“I can do that,” the words that rush to our lips when we are teased by Martha Stewart, Pinterest and HGTV with images of easy home improvement projects. But more likely the outcome of our DIY spirit is an unproductive expenditure of CO2 back and forth to Home Depot and the specialty décor shops. And often what we have left is frustration - ‘more than 10,000 ways that won’t work.’ Now in our midst, a neighbor to Board and Brew and Charnholm Real Estate is a new home décor and interior design boutique, MMP Home at1228 Camino del Mar that has everything AND the kitchen sink.

Behind the front Dutch door of this design studio and retail store are furnishings and decorative accessories with the classic appeal of contemporized vintage that invite a long and serious look. The striking colors and textures of the décor samples evoke a rapid transference to one’s own home – and the regret, if only I had a pick-up truck. All of the vibrant upholstery textiles are milled in the U.S. and the furniture is made to order constructed by the hands of local craftsmen and upholsterers – nothing mass-produced.

At the back of the shop moving past artisan and USA-crafted ceramics, pillows and household gifts is the design table where the magic unfolds. Here you can create your own styles for interior and exterior – traditional, contemporary, modern, and of course coastal. Examine the upholstery samples and product books of furniture, fixtures, finishes, lighting, flooring, and bedding – whatever you want for your home enhancement project. Brittany Runyan, store manager, will guide the many possibilities for your budget and needs - whether it is upholstering a tired but beloved chair, adding new backsplash tiles or faucet to your kitchen, ordering a specially loomed rug or making adaptations to age in place. Here the customer matches affordability with creativity and sustainability - all close to home.

Molly Proul, owner and President/Creative Design Director of MMP Design and resident of Del Mar Heights works from her design office in Sorrento Valley. A graduate of the Design Institute of San Diego achieving a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Interior Design she has accumulated national and international hospitality and retail design experiences in the architectural engineering of new stores for the GAP, Taco Bell and Jack in the Box. While living in San Francisco she started her own design firm working on projects for hotels, wineries, retail stores and homes. With her Sorrento Valley staff she has created a design studio that can execute commercial and residential projects from site location through architectural and engineering master planning, construction and project management – all with a persistent regard for sustainability guidelines.

Let’s forget adding more emissions to the atmosphere in an out-of-town search for a home improvement fix or for a wedding or birthday gift. Walk to MMP Home. With Molly’s broad expertise and creative flair and MMP Home’s commitment to products that are locally made and materials sourced primarily in the United States, there is little need for us to venture far to make our homes our own Downton Abbey – homes we don’t want to part with.
