With the inaugural opening of the Oceanside Museum of Art‘s satellite at the Herb B. Turner Gallery in Southfair, it seems only fitting that we air a program produced by Edward Kramer profiling the artistic side of Herb Turner. Herb first settled in Del Mar about 60 years ago. He apprenticed withJohn Lloyd Wright for 3 years, before moving on and eventually opening his own successful family owned design-build business. Herb founded The West Point Art Club in 1945, the first and only such group in the academy’s 150-year history.

Art was a mainstay of his life and he painted, sculpted and taught at his home studio. He exhibited at galleries including Laguna Beach Art Museum, La Jolla Art Guild, the San Diego Museum of Art and the Oceanside Museum of Art. Edward enjoyed making the video with Herb and his interviewing techniques help bring out the best in all his video subjects. “Herb Turner was a Del Mar icon and community leader. His dedication to art and architecture uplifted and broadened our little beach town and especially our self-image.” Edward stated.

He had great gifts as an architect and builder and community activist. He won respect of all he interacted with on various levels. We’ve enjoyed earlier videos of Herb’s work but Edward’s unique perspective was able to capture the true artist in Herb. It shows his love of integrating nature’s landscapes in his art and designing. Herb Turner’s work is currently on display at Southfair, 2010 Jimmy Durante Blvd,Del Mar until January 12th. The Del Mar TV video Herb Turner – Artistic profile will air throughout November on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and Friday November 8th at 11:30am. View our programs on Time Warner digital channel 130 and AT &T 99. Our channel simultaneously streams. Go to delmartv.com and click on streaming button.
