On April 16th about twenty Del Mar residents attended the first of a new series of lunch programs at the Del Mar Community Building that will be hosted twice a month by Del Mar Community Connections (DMCC).

The lunches, made possible by a $15,000 grant to DMCC through the San Diego Foundation, are designed to encourage homebound older adults to get out of their homes and socialize, and will be held on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Van rides will be provided to and from the Community Building, and along with a healthy lunch provided by local restaurants, each event will include an interactive program of some kind. The first lunch featured the piano playing of Del Mar resident Lori Ritman, and future programs will bring presentations by a master sommelier and a group called “Laughter Matters,” along with art showings, travel talks, and more.

This new project, named The Lunch Club (TLC)-Too, is designed to supplement, not replace, DMCC’s current monthly low-cost senior luncheons held at local restaurants, and is expected to provide 360-480 meals a year at the 24 luncheons. ROMEO (Retired Older Men Eating Out) and TLC (The Lunch Club) will continue to meet monthly.

Beth Levine, who chairs the program for DMCC, was pleased with the positive feedback from the first attendees and is especially encouraged that the lunches are succeeding with the main goal of the grant, which is to reduce isolation and improve socialization among Del Mar’s seniors.

Based on the comments offered after the first lunch, such as “The entire lunch, music, and chance to visit with new and old friends was delightful,” it looks like TLC is off to a very good start.

For more information, or to sign up for any of the luncheons, please contact Heather Glenn at (858) 792-7565 or email her at heather@dmcc.cc.
