The Price of Peace
Jim Benedict | Christie Lane

For many years the City Council has complained of the rising costs of the Sheriff’s contract for the City of Del Mar. With the dip in the economy the cost of this service got increased exposure against our impacted General Fund.
Our city’s General Fund has been growing at a rate of about 2% per year for the past 10 years. The Sheriff’s contract has been growing at a rate of 5.5% over the same time period. This growth rate is unsustainable against our city budget.
And, maybe most important of all, there is a growing concern on the level of service from the Sheriff. We currently have one officer 24/7. There is a feeling from many members of the community that service can be better.
The answer – let’s explore options. Maybe the answer is our own police dept.? Maybe we can have better service at a more cost efficient-basis? Maybe we can implement seasonally adjusted service for the summer months? Maybe we can form a volunteer police team like Encinitas and Solana Beach has today?
It is time to take a look.
