You’d think a restaurant as popular as Jake’s Del Mar would be too busy putting umbrellas in mai tais and serving their famous Hula Pie to become a role model for civic involvement, but instead the beachfront treasure, which opened in 1981, has spent the last thirty-one years giving back to the community. Jake’s, part of the TS Restaurant group, which also owns restaurants in Hawaii and in other California locations, sets the standard for charitable giving.

Name an event, and they’ve probably sponsored it, or donated to it, in some way. The Twilight Concert Series at Powerhouse Park, Taste of Del Mar, Summer Solstice, and Winter Wonderland are a few, along with their sponsorship of Little League, the Educator of the Month program, regular contributions to the San Diego Food Bank and silent auctions benefitting various community groups. As if that weren’t enough, they’ve held a “Fun Run” for thirty consecutive years to raise money for the Del Mar Lifeguard Association, which includes a barbeque lunch, a Polynesian dance show, a raffle for gift certificates and prizes, and commemorative t-shirts for all.

Perry Ustick, Jake’s General Manager of seven years, explained to us that impacting the local communities in which their restaurants are located in a lasting, positive way has been among the core values of TS Restaurants since their inception in 1977. Ownership, says Ustick, considers it their duty to give back to the communities in which they live and work in meaningful ways, and “Legacy of Aloha” is the name given to the company’s charitable efforts. “Legacy of Aloha,” reads the employee literature, “takes on many forms and faces, but is grounded in the spirit of giving without an expectation of receiving anything in return.”

So thank you, Jake’s, for being among the many local businesses that give, and give, and give. We’ll stop in soon for a green flash and a slice of Hula Pie!
