A long-time Del Mar resident and community activist, Marilyn Shaw died in San Francisco on March 29. She was 89 years old. Marilyn started the Del Mar school library, served on the Del Mar Elementary School Board and worked to bring about the Torrey Pines Reserve Extension, the preservation of Crest Canyon and oversee completion of the La Jolla Playhouse building on the UCSD campus. Born in Iowa, Marilyn moved to Los Angeles, graduated from UCLA and began her career in public relations and development. The Shaws moved to Del Mar where they raised their two sons, Ted and Chris on Crest Road.

After her husband’s death, Marilyn moved to San Francisco to follow her dream of encouraging and aiding the arts. She worked tirelessly for many arts organizations in the Bay Area including Midsummer Mozart, Pocket Opera, Play-Brokers and most recently Playwright’s Lab where she staged readings of new plays. In 2010 she was honored with “An Evening to Celebrate Marilyn Shaw” for which several hundred in the Bay Area arts community gathered to recognize her contributions. Her enthusiasm for art, music, reading and travel was boundless. She will be sorely missed by the many in the two communities she loved most.
