Political Potentials
Dave Druker | 10th Street

The 3rd district supervisorial race is taking shape as both current Del Mar Mayor Carl Hilliard and current Solana Beach Deputy Mayor Dave Roberts have thrown their hats into the ring. They join previously announced candidate Steve Danon, Congressman Brian Bilbray’s chief of staff. The seat is open because of the retirement of current Supervisor Pam Slater-Price at the end of her term in December 2012. Some former members of the Del Mar City Council, including Henry Abarbanel and Dave Druker, will be supporting Dave Roberts, while Crystal Crawford will be supporting Carl Hilliard. A poll sanctioned by a potential candidate reportedly shows that Hilliard and Roberts have over a 10% name recognition among potential voters, while Danon has less than 10%.

No one has officially announced for the three seats in the upcoming Del Mar City Council election. Don Mosier has expressed interest. Also there are rumblings that the people who support the continued use of the Del Mar Shores property for dogs will be putting up a candidate. If so, the people that support the continued use of the Del Mar Shores property as a Little League baseball field and for use by children will probably put up a candidate. There may actually be a race for the Del Mar City Council in 2012 after two elections without opponents.

It will be interesting to see how candidate Hilliard handles the job of Mayor Hilliard when Del Mar interests are not compatible with regional interests. Votes taken and views expressed on regional bodies should be approved by the Council majority. A case in point is Hilliard’s recent attack on the California High Speed Rail Authority which had received strong approval by Del Mar voters when it was on the ballot.
