The construction of the new Beach Safety Center will replace the inadequate existing structure and ensure effective lifeguard protection and improved access to the beach for residents and the millions of visitors to the beaches of Del Mar. Jeff Katz Architecture completed the construction documents and final design and the project broke ground in October 2011, and is on schedule and within budget. Construction is scheduled for nine months with occupancy expected no later than June 2012. The project will include ADA public restrooms, a sea wall and box culvert drainage structure, including associated sitework, and parking lot improvements. EC Constructors, Inc., the contractor on the project, recently completed the seawall construction and concrete base and walls have been poured for the box culvert that will serve as a boardwalk and access point to the Beach Safety Center when completed.

The project (including design and construction) is expected to cost $2.6 million. The construction of this project would not be possible without the fundraising efforts of the Friends of the Powerhouse, who have committed to fund one third of the construction costs, the grant from the Coastal Conservancy, and the matching grant from the Del Mar Foundation.
