for awakening to this clear Del Mar morning after the benevolence of long-awaited rain falling all day scouring months of dust and lerp psyllid from eucalyptus.
Thanks be for leaves drinking this rare nectar of nitrogen
for the raven that quoth to me from a telephone pole
for the sun flashing neon on the wings of our scrub jay
for a shy finch with butter-yellow crown and plumage that drank from a rain puddle, fearful of the raucous jay
for the pungent scent of canyon sage and soapweed
for wet beach sand yielding underneath my bare feet-- footprints forging a path to follow
for this glorious day.
