The Del Mar City Council held a 5-hour retreat to accomplish two goals; to understand our communication styles and how we work in a group setting, and to begin to set priorities for the next 2 year budget cycle. We had all prepared for the meeting by completing the DISC assessment, a standard tool for understanding how individuals interact in an organization. DISC stands for Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness.

People who score high in the “D” styles are very active in dealing with problems and challenges. People with high “I” scores influence others through talking and activity and tend to be emotional. They are described as convincing, magnetic, political, enthusiastic, persuasive, warm, demonstrative, trusting, and optimistic. People with high “S” styles scores want a steady pace, security, and do not like sudden change. People with high “C” styles adhere to rules, regulations, and structure. They like to do quality work and do it right the first time. High “C” people are careful, cautious, exacting, neat, systematic, diplomatic, accurate, and tactful. “D”s and “I”s tend to be extroverts and “S”s and “C”s tend to be introverts.

The ideal team will have individuals with different DISC scores, and this was true for our Council Members, City Manager and City Attorney. What was really important about this relationship enhancing exercise was the insight into how we communicate with others. We have some “D”s who are direct and decisive, some “I”s who are more expressive and convincing, some “C”s who seek consensus through careful presentation of facts and some “S”s whose main focus is service. A perfect fit! The five Council Members and the City Manager and City Attorney have complementary
strengths. Now we have a better understanding of each other’s styles and how best to communicate with each other.

There was also general agreement on high priority projects for the next two years, but the next retreat will finish that process by considering available budget and staff time that force the Council to be selective and realistic in setting our goals.
