Mike Cowett passed away on October 7 after a struggle with lymphoma. Mike along with his wife Patsy and children Paige and Jason lived in Del Mar for 27 years. Mike will be remembered by many of us for his willingness to volunteer on various committees even after he moved to Banker’s Hill near downtown San Diego. Mike had a long career as an attorney servicing public entities mostly water districts. His true love though in the legal world was trains and he served as the attorney for NCTD since 2001 (replacing another Del Marian – Dwight Worden).

Mike was also one of those people that while watching the City Council on TV would magically appear in a bathrobe and slippers to set the council right as they were making decisions that might affect him and his neighbors. Due to his understanding of water, he was critical in helping the city create fair and reasonable water and sewer rates. Mike was involved with Del Mar 2000 and assisted with our fight with the City of San Diego on the setting of sewage processing fees. A fight that Del Mar eventually won.

Mike was a dear friend and I enjoyed working with him at NCTD and the water commissions. We had some great times as our children grew up together. He will be sorely missed.
