Hundreds of families, many with children and some with dogs, enjoyed the first outdoor film screening at Shores Park on September 25. Organizers were blessed with a perfect summer evening. Festivities began at 5 PM with children’s activities, taco and hot dog stands and a craft beer garden. Shady Maples, a blues-inspired band that regularly plays the club circuit in San Diego and the Bay Area, provided musical entertainment.

The feature film was “180º South --- Conquerors of the Useless”, a thought-provoking adventure documentary featuring sailing, surfing, and mountain climbing. The filmmaker was inspired by pioneering outdoorsman Yvon Chouinard’s 1968 van trip to Patagonia, South America. The movie was projected on a large blow-up screen, with the audience sitting in beach chairs and on blankets.

Barbara Mandel Pache, campaign coordinator for the Shores, said, “We planned this to be a convenient, fun and affordable family evening. The Shores is centrally located, so many in town can walk to the site. We were literally overwhelmed with the positive response.” The crowd was in good spirits and seemed willing to overlook a few logistical problems, recognizing this was the first event of its kind.

Feedback from the community has been very positive. The Friends are already planning an expanded film series for the summer of 2011.

Ian Leggat, who chaired the event, is already looking forward to next year. Ian’s goal is “To become a preeminent ocean-based film event, featuring family-friendly films with an environmental message.”

Friends of Del Mar Parks produced the Outdoor Cinema with generous financial support from our sponsors. We want to encourage people to visit the Shores so that all residents can appreciate the potential community uses of the property, which was recently acquired by the City after a successful public-private fundraising campaign.
